As an essential skill the maths test plays a key role in grammar schools assessing your child. Schools take different approaches to the exam, however, they almost always assess similar topics, areas and elements.
The aim is to identify whether the child understands and can manipulate numbers as well as solve mathematical problems.
Similar to other subjects, the questions will reflect what the child has learnt in line with the national curriculum.
What’s important here is the child’s depth of knowledge and adaptability, through practise and exposure its vital they are able to apply their knowledge to different questions whether numerical or written.
Its expected that the following areas will come up within the test:
- Number – which will include decimals, percentages and fractions as well as the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
- Algebra – which will include equations and formulae.
- Shape and space (geometry) – which will include volume, area, co-ordinates and nets.
- Data handling – which will focus on statistics and probability, the idea of chance and averages.
Strong core maths skills combined with being able to work quickly and logically is what’s needed, as well as a sound understanding of times tables and the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication).
Taking between 30 to 60 minutes, the maths test can be set out in different formats, including multiple choice and written answers.
It’s important that your child covers a well-rounded programme, improving their mental maths and recall whilst also being able to recognise key bits of information within questions.
By being able to logically break down and showcase a multi-step process the student will be able to identify the best mathematical method required to solve the problem.
This skill level and way of working is something that can come through practise, confidence in the fundamental knowledge and constant exposure to different math problems.
Our Maths 11 Plus Course is focussed on cementing the fundamental knowledge, taking students through the basic operations all the way across to more advanced problems such as data handling and geometry.
With constant quizzes after topics and lessons, including mental maths, as well as a library of timed mock exams, our students are able to test, challenge and get live results to see how well they are doing.
The routine practise, learning and revision of new ways of solving problems, especially under time pressure, will help your child become confident in sitting any exam format.
Our aim is to equip your child with the knowledge they need to be the best, and in doing so comfortably sit their Maths 11 Plus exam.
