The English 11 Plus exam is a test set by grammar schools in order to assess your child’s English skill level and ability so far. They play a major role in areas with high competition and limited spaces, often being used to as the deciding factor.
At the end of the exam your child will be given a level, grade or mark which will be the grammar schools measure of how competent and strong your child’s English is. The exam itself consists of topics and areas directly linked with the English school curriculum testing the students comprehension, grammar, spelling and punctuation as well as writing ability.
The skills grammar schools often look for are composition and style, grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure and vocabulary. It’s important to focus on improving your child’s English overall, as grammar schools often have different tests including:
- Multiple choice
- Writing tasks
- Creative writing
- Reading comprehension
The writing tasks typically require a student to either write a story, script or diary entry or produce a leaflet, letter or news report.
Some grammar schools provide an option whilst others have set tasks. Through this things such as use of structure, vocabulary, punctuation and style will be measured.
The reading tasks require students to be able to read a long or short form piece of text and answer questions about that. This will measure their ability to understand, retain and extract information and often includes questions on the use of punctuation, speech English grammar.
It’s important to understand that your child will never be set anything above and beyond their age group and tests will not be set up unfairly.
The exam contents are usually areas that children of that year group are able to do, and would be something your child would have been taught at some point in school. That is why grammar schools measure English skill level, rather than if your child knows or does not know a certain skill.
Our English 11 Plus course recognises all the key areas required for your child to not just pass an exam, but for them to have a strong English skill and foundation.
By having targeted lessons on the basics of definition, meanings and sentence structures all the way to advanced topics such as analysis we can help broaden a child’s skill set. Our regular quizzes, assignments and mock tests will ensure your child is challenged regularly, when and as often as they need it.
The aim is to build your child’s grasp of English, their confidence under time pressure, increasing their vocabulary and practise of English, as well as their ability to interpret a question and respond with an answer.
Our hope is by the end of the course your child is ready to sit any exam, regardless of the school or format.
